Application 3

Multimodality, ‘New Literacies & New Basics':
Serious
Comics & L2  Graphic Texts

Due in Two Weeks

Select Option #1 or #2  (or Remix Option 1 & 2)

  • Three to Four Page Serious Graphic Story: no page limit (if you want to keep going). Export to PDF and upload to website. Use ComicLife (for Mac and PC/Windows)
  • Serious Comic means you take the intellectual, aesthetic/creative & representational affordances of the tool seriously (and your comic can by humorous or ironic).

Option 1) Serious Comic: Putting Multimodality to Work: Based on Lotherington & Jenson article and our in-class discussions, create a Graphic Text that explores & develops key ideas or themes from the reading (e.g., serious play/ludic epistemology, flat to 4D literacies, the (new) 3Rs, participatory/convergence culture, situated L2 learning, identity texts)… Feel free to dialogue with other course themes/readings.

Integrate at least one key quote (or quotes) from Lotherington/Jenson reading into the project to develop or illuminate your story. Dig deep and please avoid superficial discussion at this point of the course! And have fun playing with the media tool, coming up with interesting and innovative ways to present knowledge and tell a story using the ideas from the reading(s)…

Use ComicLife (30-day Free Trial). Avoid creating a generic cartoon ‘comic strip’ and, instead, experiment with genre, remix tools, original images, curated images, design options, stylize with filters, etc…

Option 2) L2/Culture Serious Comic: If your first language is not English, this is an opportunity for you to mobilize your L1 (language/cultural-capital) as a semiotic resource – in conjunction with images, graphics, pictures, etc. Create an L2 dual-language comic that integrates L1 and L2 (English in translation) that tells a story about language, culture, diversity, place, and/or identity (as explored in this week’s article by Lotherington & Jenson…). You may explore your experiences, stories, and histories navigating language, identity and culture. Integrate on quote from the text into your story (in reference to L2/ELL learning).

If you choose option 2, ensure that the text is dual-language (both languages appear together, somewhat like a polyglot text, though in serious comic form).
